According to Timothy J.O'Leary, the author of Computing Essentials book, System software can be described as "Background" software that enables the application software to interact with the computer. System software consists of the operating system, utilities, devuce drivers, and language translators. It works with application software to handle the majority of technical details.
System software consists of four types which are as follows :
1. Operating systems which is software that interacts between application software and the computer, handling such details as running program, storing and processing data, and coordinating all computer resources, including attached peripheral devices. The examples are Windows 7, windows Vista and Mac OS X.
2. Utlilities - Performs specific tasks related to managing computer recources of files. The examples is Norton utility for virus control.
3. Device drivers are the devices that are connected to the computer and has a special program associates with it.
4. Language translators that converts programming instructions into a machine language that can be processed by a computer.
